The False Promise of “cheap” solar energy.

The True Cost of Solar Farms: What They Don’t Tell You

The UK government and green energy companies love to tell us that solar farms are the future. They claim they will bring “cheap” and “clean” energy to millions of homes. But is that really the case? Let’s break down the real cost of large-scale solar projects—not the one the politicians and corporations want you to believe.

How Much Will These Solar Farms Really Cost?

The UK is rapidly approving massive solar projects across the country. Four major projects—Whitestone, Tween Bridge, Thorpe Marsh, and Fenwick—are set to cover over 14,100 acres of land.

These projects combined will cost between £2.6 billion and £4.9 billion to build. That’s an enormous amount of money—and it all has to be paid for by someone.

The False Promise of “Cheap” Solar Energy

We’re often told that solar energy is cheap. But when we look at the numbers, the truth becomes clear.

✔ The total capacity of these four projects is 2,350 MW.
✔ Because solar only works when the sun shines, they will operate at about 10% of their capacity.
✔ This means they will generate around 2,104 GWh of electricity per year.
✔ The construction cost alone will be £3.75 billion (midpoint estimate).

When you divide the cost over 25 years, this means solar electricity from these projects will cost at least 4p per kWh to generate. But that’s just the beginning.

The Hidden Costs That Will Hit Your Wallet

While the government and energy companies brag about how “cheap” solar power is, they never mention the extra costs that get added before the power reaches your home.

✅ Grid connection and transmission fees: 2-3p per kWh
✅ Supplier markups and operational costs: 4-6p per kWh
✅ Government green levies and taxes: 5-7p per kWh

So, by the time this “cheap” solar electricity reaches your home, it will cost you between 15p and 20p per kWh.

Compare That to the Energy Sources They’re Trying to Kill

Gas and nuclear power generate electricity for about 4-6p per kWh—without all the extra costs.

Solar requires massive subsidies, land use, and battery storage to work.

It doesn’t work at night or during bad weather.

So why is the government pushing solar? Because big corporations are making billions from taxpayer-funded subsidies.

What This Means for You

💡 Higher energy bills: The government will pass these costs onto you.
🌳 Loss of green land: Thousands of acres of farmland and countryside will be covered in panels.
⚡ Unreliable power: Solar farms don’t produce power when we need it most.

Instead of investing in nuclear power and a stronger energy grid, we’re being forced into expensive, inefficient solar projects that make the rich richer while making your energy bills higher.

The Bottom Line: You Pay, They Profit

The next time someone tells you solar is cheap, ask them why your bills keep rising. The truth is simple: solar farms are making corporations billions while forcing consumers to pay more for unreliable electricity.

If we want real energy security, we need to stop wasting money on solar farms that destroy our countryside and invest in real solutions like nuclear power.
