Never trust Labour’s net zero narrative—especially Ed Miliband’s. Askern’s solar farm, a 5MW “green dream” sold with promises of powering homes and grazing sheep, is a decade-long con that’s left Doncaster households poorer while developers cash in.
Miliband, our own MP, pushes this costly ideology over Askern’s working-class families. Here’s why Labour’s net zero is a betrayal.
In 2015, Anesco unveiled a 5MW solar farm on Askern’s old colliery, promising to power 1,500 homes and let sheep graze under 22,000 panels. It was meant to boost Doncaster’s green goals, cut carbon, and use low-grade land—all backed by Miliband’s net zero cheerleading as Doncaster North MP
Sounds great, right? Except, ten years on, Askern’s got nothing to show for it.No bill cuts. Askern households pay £1,518 a year for energy, up 42% since 2021, with bills hitting £1,849 by April 2025 (Ofgem). Green levies, funding projects like this, eat up £204 per dual-fuel bill—money straight from your pocket to developers’ profits. No jobs. No confirmed grazing, just a fenced-off industrial site.
Residents near Fenwick, fighting a new 536-hectare solar farm, point to Askern’s failure, calling these projects farmland-killers. Where’s the promised greenbelt harmony?

Miliband’s the real culprit. As Energy Secretary, he claims clean energy will save £300 by 2030, but Askern’s decade of zero relief proves his numbers are fantasy. His £150 Warm Home Discount is a Band-Aid for Askern’s pensioners—27% of the area’s population—facing fuel poverty. He dodged the Fenwick solar farm decision, passing it off to avoid bias, but that’s just ducking accountability. His net-zero push, including North Sea gas cuts, spikes bills by forcing reliance on pricey imports. The UK’s 1% global emissions share means Askern’s sacrifice changes nothing
REFORM UK’s Richard Tice calls net zero a “massive con.” He’s right. Scrapping green levies could save Askern families £100–150 a year, a lifeline for Doncaster’s £28,000 average income. Reform’s 2025 Doncaster campaign, with seven candidates, demands a net zero referendum to stop more Askern-style flops. Labour’s narrative—clean energy for all—is a lie, when your bills fund corporate profits, not local homes. Askern’s solar farm is Miliband’s betrayal laid bare: a costly, futile gesture that screws Doncaster for globalist class.
