Motion
Reform UK’s National Conference calls for the repeal of the 2008 Climate Change Act and the abolition of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), replacing them with a new independent Energy Security Group focused on delivering affordable, reliable domestic power, protecting the environment, and achieving genuine UK energy sovereignty, free from costly and unaccountable climate targets.

Rationale – Why This Motion Matters
– Seventeen years of failure – The Climate Change Act has raised bills, weakened our grid, and made the UK more dependent on imports.
– Legal carbon targets distort priorities – Binding “carbon budgets” force spending on unreliable generation, even when better options exist.
– Energy insecurity – The UK now relies on foreign gas, foreign wind turbines, and foreign solar panels instead of home-grown power.
– DESNZ is unfit for purpose – The department presides over record bills and the destruction of British farmland for low-value energy projects.
– Grid crisis – Intermittent energy sources are overloading the grid and causing curtailment, wasting both power and taxpayers’ money.
– Better alternatives exist – UK-built nuclear, domestic gas, and rooftop solar film (like Power Roll) can deliver reliable, clean power without destroying countryside.
– Economic damage – Net Zero policies have exported jobs and manufacturing to other countries while increasing household and business costs.
– Environmental harm – Large-scale solar and wind farms damage biodiversity, remove farmland from food production, and scar landscapes.
– Democratic control – Energy decisions are being driven by unelected quangos and lobbyists instead of accountable ministers and voters.
– Energy sovereignty – Without affordable, reliable domestic power, the UK cannot be truly independent.
