Why Politicians Love the Climate Agenda (And It’s Not Just About the Climate)

The political class presents climate action as a noble mission — saving the planet, protecting future generations, leading the world. But scratch beneath the surface and you find another story: money, careers, and a revolving door of green profit. One name sums it up: Ed Davey, now leader of the Liberal Democrats.

From Climate Minister to Climate Money

Ed Davey was Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change between 2012 and 2015 in the Coalition government. He set policies that locked Britain into the Net Zero pathway — subsidies for renewables, targets enforced by law, and contracts that would last decades.

When he lost his seat in 2015, he didn’t walk away from the climate world. Instead, he stepped straight into it.Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) — a global law firm with big energy clients. Davey was paid £5,000 a month as a consultant from 2017 until January 2022. That’s about £280,000 in total. (Register of Interests).

NextEnergy Capital — a solar investment company. Davey sat on its advisory board, earning £4,500 a quarter from 2017 until February 2022 — roughly £85,500.

Mongoose Energy — a community renewables developer. Davey was chairman, receiving quarterly payments and later lump sums adding up to more than £30,000.In total, that’s £400,000+ of income from climate-linked companies after he left office. All declared, all approved by the ACOBA watchdog — but ask yourself: does it pass the smell test?

Ed Davey loves taking the public for fools

The Revolving Door

Davey isn’t unique. Across all parties, ex-ministers and MPs drift into the very industries they regulated:

Chris Huhne (Lib Dem, Davey’s predecessor at DECC) joined Zilkha Biomass.

Amber Rudd (Conservative, ex-Energy Secretary) took roles with energy advisory firms and Equinor.

The pattern is clear: make climate law in office, profit from it out of office.

Why the Climate Agenda Is So Attractive

It’s not just about “saving the planet.” The Climate Agenda offers:

Endless Funding:

Net Zero is locked into law. Billions in subsidies and contracts are guaranteed.

No Accountability: Costs are hidden in your energy bills, not direct taxation.

Global Networks:

Politicians get plugged into the UN, EU, and corporate boards.

Moral Cover:

Wrap yourself in green rhetoric and criticism gets dismissed as “climate denial.”As long as Net Zero is written into law, the money pipeline never stops — and politicians know it.

Follow the Money, Not the Rhetoric

Ed Davey is just one example, but he’s a perfect one.

The leader of the Liberal Democrats, the man who helped draft Britain’s climate laws, has personally pocketed hundreds of thousands from the green energy sector. And yet, when voters complain about soaring bills, blackouts, or farmland being covered in solar panels, politicians brush it off as the “price we must pay.”But maybe it’s not their price.

Maybe it’s ours.

Net Zero isn’t just a climate plan. It’s a career plan. And we’re the ones footing the bill.
